Director's Statement
When I first met Andrea Botez in 2022, I was immediately struck by the sheer velocity of her life. At the time, she was exploring the idea of a project that examined her own crossroads: the tension between the traditional "American Dream" of a Stanford education and the digital empire she was accidentally building in real-time. With the support of Lana Link and the Moving Picture Institute Documentary Lab, we set out to turn that seed of an idea into a film that captures the resilience of a daughter of immigrants who found that the “standard” of a degree couldn't compete with the objective outcomes of her own entrepreneurialism.
My goal was to create a film that feels as electric and fast-paced as Andrea herself. To honor her journey, it was essential that the film spoke the language of her world. This meant leaning into the high-energy, online pacing her audience loves and anchoring the experience in a pulsing techno-inspired soundtrack that reflects her thriving career as a DJ.
At its core, this is a story about gatekeepers - and the courage it takes to walk past them. It is a celebration of a young woman who stopped trying to fit into a prestigious box and instead carved her own path through chess, music, and content, building a career with business outcomes most traditional college graduates can only dream of. I want the audience to laugh, to feel the "hustle," and ultimately to leave feeling inspired by the idea that sometimes the best way to achieve your dreams is to stop asking for permission and start building your own reality. Seeing Andrea’s growth over the years has been a tremendous honor, and this film is a tribute to that relentless resilience.
